Chopper Kits - Not Just For the Professionals Anymore

I don't know of one guy who doesn't think that with a bit of time and the right tools he couldn't build a chopper. At one point you would need to do a lot of fabrication and need a whole host of steel working tools and machinery to get the look you were after. But over time this has changed and now with a decent tool kit and the ability to follow instructions you can build yourself a Chopper. The secret to this transformation is chopper kits. In the following article By Tom Wheeler you'll get an insight into just whats involved in building a chopper using an off the shelf chopper kit.

More and more people are building their own motorcycles using chopper kits. These are the life size versions of model motorcycle kits. What use to be left up to the professionals is now quickly becoming a hobby for amateurs. You can purchase one of these kits to upgrade your current bike, or to completely build your own.

Because there are so many options when it comes to getting a "bike in a box", the first thing to determine is your budget. Though you could end up saving lots of money by doing it yourself, depending on the look and feel you want, once you finish purchasing all your extras you might end up spending about what you would have if you had purchased the bike from a dealer.

Should You Upgrade?

Secondly, you need to decide whether you are upgrading your current bike or want a completely new one. If you are upgrading, every manufacturer has parts and accessories you can purchase separately, or kits for certain areas like the chassis or frame.

Building from Scratch

If you are building from scratch, then you need to determine which make and model you like the best. Then determine what color and finish you want. Though a chopper kit comes with all the parts, it does not come painted or finished. This is one way to truly put your mark on the bike and make it your own.

For the inexperienced builder, there are several options when it comes to learning how to put your kit together. For those that like to figure things out by getting their hands dirty, you will have the time of your life figuring out how to put your chopper kit together. Be prepared for trial and error, and possibly some leftover parts, but that is the fun of it, right? For those that like reading, there are detailed instructions included with each kit, as well as several books you can purchase or download with instructions on exactly how to build your own bike.

For those that learn by watching someone else there are a couple of options as well. There are instructional videos and DVDs. You can watch them as many times as you like until you are comfortable with the process. If you are able to hook up a TV and VCR in your garage, you can rewind and playback as you assemble your kit. There are also classes or "boot camps" you can attend where you will have an instructor there to help you along and answer any questions.

Are you looking for a greasy, mechanical, do-it-yourself, garage project will occupy you for a couple of weeks? Putting together a chopper kit seems to be the hobby that is becoming increasingly popular. These days, you will be hard pressed not to see at least one motorcycle zoom by you on the road. Just know that could have been you flying by on your custom, personalized bike built with your own two hands.

Big Bear Choppers

creators of the amazingly sucessful Venom Pro Street have been one of the Custom motorcycles scene biggest successes in recent years. Selling Both chopper kits and completed bikes.they now employ over 75 people. Recent years have seen a decline in the sale of the kits but a corresponding increase in the number of complete bikes being sold.

In recent years they have taken on a number of franchises which is one of the reason that the kit side of the business has declined, people find it easier to purchase the completed bikes from the local dealer.

Always innovative Big Bear choppers are now working on a chopper aimed at the female market. Over the coming years this is set to become one of the fastest growing bike sectors and as ever Big bear hope to be in the Fore Front.

Finding The Right Custom Motorcycle

One of the hottest trends in motorcycling in recent years has been the re-emergence of the Chopper as a main stream vehicle. Once the preserve of biker gangs you are now more likely to see a lawyer or a doctor cruising on his Chopper than outlaw biker. This resurgence has been fueled by a whole host of TV Shows such as American Chopper and The Great Biker Build Off.

Not since the heyday of choppers in the 70's, no doubt fuelled by the iconic movie Easy Rider, have you been able to find such a large range of choppers available in either kit form or already completed. In this article we will attempt to guide you through the process of finding the right chopper that will give you years of service.

The first thing to decide is what style of chopper you want. There are basically 3 types to choose from.

A bobber is the original style of chopper that was first created by American Servicemen returning from the Second World War.  The bike is customised by removing anything that isn't needed. This helps to reduce the weight and increase the performance. Handling can also be improved by lowering the unsprung weight and moving the centre of gravity.  Over the past couple of years the Bobber has started to grow in popularity.

It is very easy to spot a pro street chopper. They have fat rear tires and long extended forks. The style is  loosely derived from drag bikes. The Bikes geometry can make the handling an bit awkward on twisty roads but on a straight and away from the lights they really come into their own.

Appearing in the late 1970's and early 1980's rat bikes are like something from the Movie "Mad Max "  The philosophy behind them is to keep the bike on the road for the longest amount of time and spend the least amount of money possible. This often results in parts from other machines being cannibalised and added to the bike.  Rat Bikes are almost exclusively Matt Black

Once you have decided what style is for you should decide what rear suspension the bike will have. Hard Tails as the name suggests have no rear suspension and usually rely on the springing in the seat for any level of comfort. Soft Tails as you will probably guessed will have rear suspension and give a more comfortable ride. If you intend to do a lot of miles the a soft tail is probably a wise choice.
