The terms that one associates with Harley Davidson Motorcycles have been around for many years now and below we look at some of the ones more commonly heard.

1.  Ape Hangers – These are handlebars on the motorcycles which have been elevated so that they raise the hands of the rider above their shoulders.

2. Big Twin – This term relates to the larger sized engines used in Harley Davidson motorcycles.  Models such as the Sportster come with engines ranging from 883 to 1200 cc (cubic centimeters), whilst most others have engines whose sizes range from 1340, 1450 and 1584cc.

3. Bobber –   This motorcycle is often referred to as the Bobtail, and was one of the first custom motorcycles to appear and dates back to the early 1950’s and were used by men returning back from the Second World War.  These were ridden as a way of rekindling the thrill some of the got from flying fighter planes and all non essential items or extras were removed from the bike.  This made them much more powerful because there was far less weight on the machine.

4. Blockhead – This term is to do with the innovative Evolution V Twin engine which the Harley Davidson Company designed and produces.  It was this engine which replaced the shovelhead and features overhead valves.  It is most commonly to be found on motorcycles that were produced after 1980 such as the Sportsters and Big Twins.

5. Fat Head – This is a term used to describe the twin cam engine that the company brought into production in 1999 and is still to be found on many of their machines today.

6. Fat Boy – This is the bike that was ridden by Arnold Schwarzenegger in Terminator and has certain characteristics such clearly show what it is.  The front disc wheel on this machine is solid and all gauges for the machine are mounted on the engine.  This particular motorcycle has now become the company’s top selling one.

7. Hardtail – This refers to any motorcycle within the Harley Davidson range where the frame has no suspension.  Many of those who ride Harleys refer to this type of motorcycle as a rigid also.

8. Low Rider – This motorcycle first appeared on the scene in the 1970’s and it is because of the low riding position due to the lowered seat is what gives this machine its name.  One of the motorcycles which are classed as this type is the Harley Davidson Super Glide.

9. Shovelhead – This engine which has now been replaced by the blockhead was originally introduced and fitted to Harley Davidson motorcycles from 1966.  It was the same engine that replaced the Panhead engine which in turn had replaced the Knucklehead engine that had been used in this company’s motorcycles from 1936 to 1947.

10.  Softail – These particular models of motorcycle resemble the Hardtail which we have discussed above.  However this one does have suspension but is hidden from view because it is placed underneath the engine.

This is what sparked the revival of the bobber, all roads aren’t straight and bobbers are very functional with good performance and good handling, they might not be perfect for a 1/4 mile dragrace but when the roads get twisty bobbers come into their own.. and they look great!!

When you are thinking of building a custom motorcycle using a kit you will be amazed at what some kits contain and what some do not.  Certainly complete motorcycle kits tend to cost a lot more than those which contain just the essential parts.  In this article we take a look at some of the parts that will be included within complete motorcycle kits so that you can build a machine that says who you are.

1.  Chassis – This is what you will be building your custom motorcycle around and is one of the most expensive items to be included in the kits.  There is a wide array of designs to select from and which one you choose will depend on what riding position you are after. 

2. Engine – Another crucial component in the kit as this is what makes the motorcycle travel along the road.  Again there is a wide array of styles and sizes to select from and what you get will depend on how you want the bike to look.  You can either go for a Panhead, Shovelhead or Knucklehead style engine which come in sizes starting at around 80 inches and going up to as much as 145 inches.

3. Carburetors – This is another crucial part of making sure that you have the right one for the cables you are using are vital.  But with a complete motorcycle kit this is something that you need not worry about as the supplier will have ensured that it is.

4. Drag Pipes – It is important to ensure that yours match the style of bike you are wishing to build and come with heat shields.  Although the pipes may look much nicer without the shields on them they do actually protect you.

5. Seat – Again when you are selecting your complete motorcycle kits you will have a wide selection of seats to choose from.  Not only will there be different styles to consider but also they come in different materials and colors.  Ideally you need one that not only goes with the design of the motorcycle you are building but which will be comfortable to sit on when riding the machine.

6. Gas Tank – This is something that will reflect the style of bike that you are intending to build and again there are many different styles to select from.  Some people prefer the coffin shaped ones whilst others prefer ones that have a more teardrop design to them.  But it should be one that fits well on to the chassis of the motorcycle you are

When deciding which custom bike kit to buy you need to look at more than just how much it costs.  Although you won’t spend so much on custom bike kits as you would on a bike that is ready made the cheaper one’s are unlikely to give you a good quality bike.  So it is far better if one actually spends time comparing the various ones available.  Certainly it is worth spending a little more to save you a lot of heartache in the future.

After you have completed your research and chosen the custom bike kit for you, then you are on the first rung of the ladder to creating something that is unique.  Through using such kits one can learn everything that goes into constructing a custom bike and over the years you can then add to it as you wish.  The one thing that will bring you satisfaction in the end is knowing that as you cruise around on it you are the one that has lovingly created it from the ground upwards.

Before when people wished to build their own custom bikes they needed to use various tools in order to create some custom parts.  However, because custom bike kits have become increasingly popular so company’s like Harley produce aftermarket parts such as wheels, seats, exhaust systems that can be used with them.  Also no longer do you have to spend lots of money buying equipment such as blow torches or saws in order to create a one off piece of machinery.

The other benefit to be gained from purchasing custom bike kits rather than trying to build one from scratch is the cost.  No longer do you have to spend time driving around looking for that part you need or buying parts which are wrong.  With these kits everything is there already for you and you can then just decide if you want to replace some of these parts with something else when you feel like it.

Over 5 years ago the first Revtech engine the 88 was launched this was followed by the revtech 100 and the firebreathing Revtech 110.   On all revtech engines  new cases are cast in one piece. They are machined then precision cut with the halves kept as a pair. This ensures perfect alignment of the flywheels on the inside, with the added benefit of a better appearance on the outside.

You can’t deny that these engines look awesome and would help make any chopper look like a show winner.

The real enthusiast will sit down with a blank piece of paper and write a list of things to do #1 on that list will be Build Your Own Motorcycle Frame. Before you even think about something like this learn to weld, and learn to weld GOOD! those little welds will be the only thing keeping from a ride in a van with flashing lights and sirens.

As discussed elsewhere on this site there are plenty of available that you can basically just bolt together to get your own chopper. But if you are serious and really want to build your own chopper why not spend a few hours on the Internet finding parts that are compatible and design your bike from the ground up. Even if you don’t want to go as far as building your own frame you’ll find many places where you can buy a frame with the right dimensions. Then source an engine wheels etc and soon you’ll be on your way to a true custom bike.
